Grasshoppers, crickets and katydids
are part of the Order Orthoptera. Most grasshoppers
have highly developed hind legs, much stronger
and larger than their other four legs. They can
jump like no other animal on earth in proportion
to their size. It is amazing how few people realize
that grasshoppers also possess very beautiful
and colorful wing patterns that
also facilitate as camouflage. Grasshoppers can
be one of the most destructive insects and
will eat almost any vegetation it encounters
when they get hungry.
Grasshopper infestations are
responsible for major crop losses in the US every
year. Many different grasshopper species live
together in the same habitat and share compete
for available food and territory space. Grasshoppers
have been collected, studied, and named in all
but the most frigid regions on earth. There are
more than 10,000 species that have been classified
and given proper scientific names. For the insect
collector, we have many beautiful framed grasshoppers
in a variety colors and species.
