Butterflies are one of the most beautiful creatures that have evolved in our planet's history. They belong to the order Lepidoptera of which there are about 150,000 different species of butterflies and moths. There are more species of Lepidoptera than there are for any other type of insect, except for beetles. "Lepidos" is the Greek word for "scales" and "Ptera" is the Greek word for "wing". Butterflies are flying insects with two pairs of large iridescent scaly wings and like all insects they have six jointed legs, three body parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton. There are more than 20,000 different kinds of butterflies in the world living in all types of environments, from hot to cold, dry to moist, at sea level, and even in the high mountains. Most butterfly species, however, are found in the tropics, and especially in tropical rainforests. While butterflies may have the upper hand as far as their color diversity goes, they still only make up about 10% of the Lepidoptera in existence. Moths are a more diverse species than butterflies and some of them are even far more spectacular as a whole. There are in fact many beautiful moths out there and anyone looking for colorful Lepidoptera would be a fool to overlook them.
